Founded in 1963 by the legendary musician and conductor Marin Constantin (1925–2011), the National Chamber Choir "Madrigal – Marin Constantin" has become a landmark of national and international musical life and cultural diplomacy. It is defined by its distinctive sound, the non-vibrato technique, the stereophonic stage placement and the imposing costumes. Its repertoire is directed towards renaissance, pre-classical and classical music, romanticism, Byzantine music and contemporary Romanian and universal creation. The ensemble's stage presence and composition were constantly refined, so that its performance has come to be compared by critics to "a Stradivarius violin in Paganini’s hand".
In November 2016, the National Chamber Choir "Madrigal - Marin Constantin" was officially recognized as an Ambassador of Freedom, Hope and Peace, receiving the "Jean Nussbaum and Eleanor Roosevelt" award at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, during the Global Summit on Religion, Peace and Security.
On March 1, 2023, at the Palace of the Parliament, the Senate of Romania officially inaugurated the "Madrigal - Marin Constantin Galleries", a dedicated space hosting cultural events and temporary and permanent exhibitions of the National Chamber Choir "Madrigal - Marin Constantin".
Since 2011, the Madrigal Choir has been running the Cantus Mundi National Program, the largest program of social integration through music for children in Romania, initiated by the renowned conductor Ion Marin. The program, which currently brings together 1,991 choirs and almost 70,000 children from the country and the diaspora, was formalized at government level in 2014, becoming a new Directorate of the National Chamber Choir "Madrigal - Marin Constantin".
